The Secret Life of Melania Trump

After Donald Trump has decided to run to be the 45th president of United States of America, he has been leading the mainstream media headlines ever since. And he is going to lead the headlines for next eight more years.

But the rough, tough and unique style of campaigning of Donald Trump hasn't been able to overshadow his better half Melania Trump at all. She is every bit as impactful as the billionaire's surge to claim the Republican nomination and then the historical White House. The beautiful Yugoslav-born model recently became the second First Lady of United States of America to be born overseas after her husband won the US election to follow Barack Obama into the Oval office.

Who is Melania Trump?

melania-and-donald-trumpBefore meeting Donald Trump at the Kit Kat Klub in Manhattan and stepping into a glitzy, expensive and luxurious world of limos, penthouses, diamonds and caviar, Melania (Muh-LAH-nee-ah) Knauss used to live silently.Melania Knavs, born on April 26, 1970; is a Slovene-American former model and  the current First Lady of the United States. She is married to businessman and 45th President of United States of America, Donald Trump. Melania is 46, meaning there is a 24 year age gap to her 70 year old husband. Melania Trump was born and raised in Yugoslavia. She became a permanent Resident of the United States in 2001 and got her citizenship in 2006. She is the second foreign-born First Lady of the United States, following Louisa Adams in 1825! She was raised in one of the many anonymous apartment buildings made of concrete when Josip Tito was the socialist leader of Yugoslavia. Over-the-top capitalism, let alone full-blown Trumpism, didn’t exist where she was born. “She never really wanted to stand out or be the center of attention, ” said Mirjana Jelancic, a good elementary school friend of Melania who lives in the hilly town of Sevnica in what is now called Slovenia. Then she became wife of Donald Trump, current President of United States.

Early Life of Melania Trump

Melanija Knavs was born in Novo Mesto, a city on a bend of the Krka River in southeastern Slovenia, close to the border with Croatia. She is the daughter of Amalija and Viktor Knavs. Her father Viktor Knavs managed automobile and motorcycle dealerships for a automobile manufacturer which was owned by the states. Her father was from the nearby town named Radeče. Her mother was from a village called Raka, and was a patternmaker at the children's clothing manufacturer company named Jutranjka in Sevnica. She changed the Slovan form of her last name Knavs to the German name Knauss after she started her career as a model. She grew up in a modest apartment in a housing block in Sevnica, situated in Slovenia's Lower Sava Pit. Melania Trump has a sister, Ines and an elder half-brother Denis, who is from her father's previous relation. Although Melania's family comes from a Roman Catholic background, her father, to the dismay of their family members, wished for Melania to not obtain the Christian sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion because he strongly believed in Marxist-Leninist atheism. Nevertheless, Melania was later married in an Episcopal Church of Bethesda by the Sea. She also has received Holy Communion there at Midnight Mass during her latest Christmas celebrations.During her teenage years, her family members moved to a new two storied house in Sevnica. She lived in a high rise apartment in Ljubljana as a high school student. Melania attended the  Secondary School of Design and style and Photography in Ljubljana. She dropped out of University of Ljubljana after studying there for just one year. She can speak six languages: English, French, Italian, German, Serbo-Croatian and her native Slovene.

Modeling Career of Melania Knauss

melania-trump-modellingMelania Knauss started her modeling career at the age of 5 and started doing commercials at 16, when she posed for the Slovenian fashion photographer Stane Jerko. At the age of 18, she signed with a modeling agency inside Milan, Italy. Melania was named runner-up in the 1992 Jana Magazine "Look of the Year" contest, which was held in Ljubljana. The magazine promised its best three contestants a  international modeling contract. Right after attending the College of Ljubljana for just one year, she started modeling for fashion houses in Milan and Paris. Then she moved to the city of New York in 1996. Paolo Zampolli, an Italian businessman, negotiated her contract and visa.In an interview in New York city, Zampolli said that he often traveled through Europe’s fashion scene each year, selecting models who had not only the looks but also also had what it takes to survive the intense pace of modeling in New York.In Melania, he found someone “stable and focused", said Zampolli.Melania seemed stable, focused and confident even as a schoolgirl in Slovenia, according to one of her friends from her childhood days, Jelancic. Melania Knav, who changed her surname to Knauss as her modeling profession began, was not only striking and smart but also a practical girl who could sew very well and create wonderful clothes", Jelancic stated In an interview which was taken in their hometown.Melania appeared as a model on the covers of Harper's Bazaar (Bulgaria),.Vanity Fair, Ocean Drive, In Style Weddings, Avenue, Allure, New York Magazine, Vogue (covered Melania and Trump's marriage), and GQ (UK). She has been featured as a bikini model in the 2000 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. She was associated with Irene Marie Administration Group and Donald Trump's Trump Model Management. Melania always liked to keep a low profile, but things got a little different when her celebrity sexual appeal was cemented by her in the January of 2000, when she decided to appear nude on the cover of GQ, a British magazine. Her icy, blue-green eyes. Thick and pouty lips. Lying provocatively on a fluffy carpet made of fur on Trump’s private plane, wearing a nothing but a sparkly necklace.

“Sex at 30, 000 feet. Melania Knauss earns her air miles," was the magazine’s headline. It was Antoine Verglas's idea to do the photo shoot. Antoine Verglas is a famous fashion photographer and had shot Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford and other supermodels. GQ was seeking an attractive photograph essay about jet-setters — and who was better model than Knauss, the stunning model whose boyfriend owned a jet?Verglas, who is a makeup artist and hair stylist, spent whole day at LaGuardia Airport hangar inside Trump’s custom-built special jet, which includes, among other features, seat buckles made of 18 karat gold.Verglas mentioned in an interview that he was going for a sexy photo shoot. “She is simple to photograph because she has.no flaws.”Verglas said that though she seems to appear nude, Melania discreetly covered her private parts, and “there were certain sittings she would not do.”In another photograph from that day, Melania is pictured on the blanket of fur, handcuffed to a leather briefcase. Plus there is the one photo of her standing on the wing wearing a red bra and a thong, sunglasses and knee-high leather boots, pointing a gun, just like a Bond Girl.In the piece, which was released during Trump’s Reform Party presidential bid, GQ cited Knauss as saying of the likelihood of being first lady: “I will put all my hard work and effort into it, and I will always keep supporting my husband.”

melania-trumpA year later, Melania appeared in the bathing suit edition of Sports Illustrated.Verglas said that around the same time he was was shooting Melania he was also working with Carla Bruni, a model now married to former president of France Nicolas Sarkozy. He described the two models, both of them are about the same age and both wedded themselves into presidential politics, as very different.Gregarious Bruni dated one famous man after another, which includes Mick Jagger and rock god, as mentioned by the fans in the 60s and 70s, Eric Clapton. Bruni was also happened to be linked to Trump for a brief period of time, who was also pursuing Princess Diana after she and Prince Charles got divorced. But Melania stayed far from “the scene,” hung out in her modest apartment and had “no history boyfriends and relations” in New York, Verglas said. “And that was very unusual in our business.” Later, when Verglas was photographing her a few years ago in Trump’s Mar-A-Lago estate in Palm Beach which had 118-room , “I thought, ‘The girl from Slovenia in Mar-A-Lago, ’ he said. “It was obviously a wow. Like Cinderella." On September 1, 2016, Melania submitted defamation lawsuits against British tabloid the Daily Mail and Webster Tarpley, a Maryland political blogger, coming from their publication of accusations that Melania performed as an escort for a gentlemen's club in Italy in the 1990s. Tarpley and the Daily Mail published retractions and apologies.

The American Dream

Through her lawyer, she has indicated that she first visited United States on a business visitor visa in August 1996. Then Melania obtained an H-1B visa in Oct 1996. After that, she regularly came back to Slovenia in order to obtain a series of four more one-year work visas because, at the time, Slovenians could only get one-year visas in United States. In November 2016, the Associated Press reported that Melania was paid about 2000 dollars for 10 modeling jobs in United States in 1996 just before she had legal permission to work in the country. In response, her attorney stated the paperwork on which AP relied "have not been verified, [and] do not reflect our records including corresponding passport stamps. "Applying as a model of "extraordinary ability", Melania got her  green card and became a lawful permanent resident of United States in 2001, and a citizen in 2006

How She Met The Trump

donald-and-melania-trump-arrive-in-washingtonPaolo Zampolli, mutual friend of Melania and Trump, wished to throw a memorable party for his ID Modeling Agency during the Fashion week of New York in 1998, so he selected the Kit Kat Klub, a hot nightspot in Manhattan. He filled the place with famous models, including Melania Knauss, the statuesque young Slovenian he had found out working in Paris and Milan.Meanwhile, that low-key lifestyle continued when Melania came to New York in the mid 1990s, said Edit Molnar, another model and friend of Melania. She used to save her money and avoided the whole the party scene.“She was a homebody, ” Molnar said in a telephone interview from Paris, France, where she now resides. “She is completely the opposite of Donald Trump”.According to Molnar, Melania went to the nightclub that evening, mainly out of commitment to Zampolli and her modeling agency. And there, Melania met Trump, who was out on the town with a date. This was after he splited with his second wife, Marla Maples. Molnar remembered watching Trump literally  fall for her friend. “She is incredible,” Molnar recalled him saying. “I want this woman.” Melania refused to give Trump her phone number, but Trump was very persistent and left his. Days later, she called Trump. Shortly after, Zampolli mentioned, he remembered an evening in New York city where he, Melania, Trump and magician David Copperfield took a dark stretch limo to dinner at the famous Cipriani restaurant.A life of Trump limo and helicopter and jet rides had only just begun for Melania. “People will start to love Melania when they know Melania,” Zampolli said. “It will not take long for folks to fall in love with her. ” Melania became a hot commodity once she was with Trump especially since Trump always loved bragging about their sex life. The couple was interviewed by Radio shock jock Howard Stern by telephone in 1999 and true to his provocative form, he asked Melania what was she wearing at the moment. “Not much,” Replied Melania coyly.

Wedding of Melania and Donald Trump

Soon after shifting to New York City in 1996, Melania met her future spouse Donald at a Fashion Week party in New York City in September 1998. Trump and Marla Maples had separated in May 1997; divorce procedures were completed on June 8, 1999. Donald went to the event with another date, Celina Midelfart, and Melania at first declined to give Donald her phone number. Melania broke off the relationship soon after it started, but the pair reconciled soon after a couple of months. Their relationship gained focus after a 1999 interview on The Howard Stern Show. In 2000, Melania made an appearance with Donald while he was campaigning for that year's Reform Party presidential nomination. Their relationship acquired additional publicity after the 2004 release of Donald's business-focused reality television show, The Apprentice. After becoming engaged in 2004, Donald and Melania were married in an Anglican service on January 22, 2005, at  The Episcopal Church of Bethesda by the Sea situated in Palm Beach, Florida, followed by a reception in the ballroom at Donald's Mar-a-Lago estate.

The occasion was attended by celebrities such as Rudy Giuliani, Heidi Klum, Star Jones, P. Diddy, Katie Couric, Barbara Walters, Matt Lauer, Regis Philbin, Simon Cowell, Kelly Ripa, then-Senator Hillary Clinton, and former president Bill Clinton. At the wedding reception, Billy Joel serenaded the audience with "Just the Way You Are" and delivered new lyrics about Donald to the tune of "The Lady Is a Tramp". The Trumps' marriage ceremony and wedding reception were broadly covered by the media. Melania wore a $200,000 dress made by John Galliano of the house of Christian Dior. On March of 20, 2006, Melania gave birth to Barron William Trump, first and only child of Trump and Melania. Melania gave his middle name, and her husband suggested his first name. As an infant, Barron reportedly filled his own floor in the Trumps' apartment in Trump Tower in Manhattan, but usually slept in a baby crib in his parents' bedroom. He plays golf with his father and is reported to be fluent in Slovene. He is said to like putting on a suit and tie, and Trump's nickname for him is "Mini-Donald".

Melania's Role in Trump's Campaign

trump-family-at-a-rallyIn November of 2015, Melania Trump was asked about her husband's presidential campaign. Melania stated: "I always encouraged him because I know what he will be doing and what he can really do for United States. He adores the American people and he really wants to help them to do better." Melania Trump played a comparatively small part in her husband's presidential campaign—atypical of spouses of presidential running candidates. Melania Trump, 45 years old, who always avoids speaking in public, discovers herself directly in the 2016 presidential election campaign spotlight, and then as the first lady of United States. An  unconventional spouse of probably the most unconventional president ever. She has become the first first lady born in another country since Louisa Adams, spouse of John Quincy Adams, who moved into the White House in 1825. Melania is the third wife of Donald Trump — another unusual first for a first lady. Ronald Reagan, along with a single ex-wife when he took oath and became president, so far is the only U.S. president to get divorced.Melania is  also the most linguistically talented first lady, as she speaks four languages, which includes heavily accented English. Plus, without a doubt, she is the only first lady in history to have posed in buff while lying upon a fur blanket and handcuffed to a leather briefcase, as she did on Trump’s jet for British magazine GQ in 2000.“She provides great balance” to Trump, said Roger Stone, the president's former political adviser who has known the couple since before they got married. She is smart — “not just an arm piece, ” Said by Stone. “She would be the most glamorous first lady since Jackie Kennedy. ”

Melania Trump has experienced  many serious political campaigns, promotions and strategies in the past. For example, in 2000, when her then-boyfriend briefly sought the nomination of Reform Party. And while she has always maintained a quiet, stand-by-your-man persona, she got herself mixed in up in political issues and problems from time to time. In April of 2011, when Trump was starting considering the idea to run for president and was one of the leading “birthers” challenging the validity of birth certificate of President Obama and legal citizenship of United States, Melania defended and supported her husband on TELEVISION, saying he was “brilliant” and had a “genius’s mind. ” In Trump's election campaign of the 2016, Melania Trump has displayed more of her introvert side.. She infrequently travels with her outspoken husband as he flies around the country in his private Boeing 757. She rarely talks to the media, and she declined to be interviewed for many times. Her close friends said that she prefers to stay at home — or homes, actually, in both New York and Palm Beach — with Baron who the couple’s 9-year-old and only son. On the campaign trail, Her peripatetic spouse has mentioned that Melania is watching him in the news from home, always supporting him. “My wife said something very interesting,” Trump stated last month on CNN. “She’s my pollster, okay?”

Trump is famously obsessed over his poll figures. He mentioned that his wife gave him great approval ratings, saying, “You know, if you really make an announcement, you are going to win the election.” The day Donald Trump announced his candidacy in June, Melania was by his side as he slowly descended through the Trump Tower escalator to speak to the cheering crowd below. Melania was by his side two months later from that day, too, at the very first Republican debate in Cleveland. Although it is Trump’s daughter Ivanka who has spoken out more on Donald's behalf. “It’s a lot of obligation for a woman to be married to a man like my husband.” Melania told Parenting magazine a few years ago. “I need to be quick, smart and intelligent.” In that interview she mentioned that her spouse “breathes business,” and she loves her role as hands-on mother of young Barron Trump. “We know very well what our roles are and we are happy with them,” Melania said. “My opinion is that you should not try to change husband. It is a big mistake.” Melania came as a guest on Trump’s famous reality TV show, “The Apprentice. ” In the show she displayed their luxurious apartment in Fifth Avenue, with Versailles-like gold leaf decoration and outstanding views of Central Park. “You’re very lucky, ” said a contestant while touring the apartment. Melania had a glass of champagne in her hand when she shot back immediately with a mild smile on her face: “And he’s not lucky? ”

Melania's Own Jewelry Line

melania-trump-posing-with-awardThe former high-fashion model started her very own “Melania” line of jewelry, marketed a $150-an-ounce moisturizer which is made with caviar and wore a Dior gown that costs $200,000 at their splashy Palm Beach wedding, which took place a decade ago. In July 2016, Melania's official web page was redirected to Trump.com. On Twitter, she stated that her website was outdated and did not accurately reflect on her current business and professional interests. This change emerged after it was extensively noted by the media that the website had falsely claimed for more than 10 years that she had a degree in architecture and design from the University of Ljubljana. Her biography in the 2016 Republican National Convention official program also inaccurately mentioned that she had received a degree in Slovenia.

Melania Trump as First Lady

Melania assumed the role of First Lady of the United States on January 20, 2017. She is the second foreign-born woman to have the position (after Louisa Adams, wife of John Quincy Adams, who was born in 1775 in London to an American father and British mother). Melania is the second First Lady (after Louisa Adams) to have immigrated to the United States. At 5 foot 11 inches, she is also one of the tallest First Ladies to hold the office, tied up with Michelle Obama and Eleanor Roosevelt who were also that height. When questioned by The New York Times in 1999 what her purpose would be if Donald Trump were to become president, Melania replied: "I would be very traditional. Like Betty Ford or Jackie Kennedy."  In 2016, she told CNN her focus as First Lady would be to help women and children. She also stated she would fight cyberbullying, specifically among children, having quit social media herself because of to the "negativity".

Five days before the election, she informed a crowd of supporters in Pennsylvania: "Our culture has become too mean and too rough, especially to children and teenagers. It is never OK whenever a 12-year-old girl or boy is laughed at, bullied, or assaulted. It is terrible when that takes place on the playground. And it is completely unacceptable when it is done by somebody with no identity hiding on the internet." Regarding the contrast of her platform with her husband's style of Twitter attacks throughout his campaign, Melania said soon after the election that she had rebuked him "all the time" yet that "he will do what he wants to do in the end." She is likely to keep residing in Trump Tower with her son Barron at least until the end of his current school term.

Accusation of Plagiarizing Michelle Obama's speech

michelle-obama-and-melania-trumpMelania Trump appeared to follow ex First Lady Michelle Obama a little too literally at the Republican Conservative Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, when Melania was accused of plagiarising parts of Mrs Obama's 2008 convention speech. A good amount of lines in the generously applauded speech given by Melania Trump at the Republican national convention on Monday night seems to have been copied from a speech Michelle Obama provided at the 2008 Democratic convention. "Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values, that you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do,” Michelle Obama addressed the crowd of Democrats in 2008. “And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them onto the next generation. Because we want our children – and all children in this nation – to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.” After this occurrence Trump said this to GOP delegates on Monday: “From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise."“That you treat people with respect. They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily life. That is a lesson that I continue to pass along to our son, and we need to pass those lessons onto the many generations to follow, because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.” Journalist Jarrett Hill was one of the first to point out that lines Donald Trump’s spouse spoke about the importance of hard work and strong family morals contains similar lines from Michelle Obama's previous speech. Accusations of plagiarism was rejected by Trump Campaign. Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort stated it was “just absurd” to say that Melania had plagiarised the ex first lady Michelle Obama. "There’s no cribbing of Michelle Obama’s speech, ” Manafort told CNN, adding “there’s no feeling on her part that she did it. ” Manafort suggested that the first lady was simply using “words that are common words”. An initial statement was given by Jason Miller, the campaign's senior communication adviser and Trump's speechwriter. In the statement he said that Melania Trump’s speech included fragments associated with others’ speeches that reflected her very own thinking”, though avoided answering directly about claims of plagiarism. Miller also mentioned that the speech was written by Melania Trump’s team. This contradicts with Melania Trump's own statement which she made in an interview with NBC just before delivering the speech. She claimed that she wrote the speech all by herself. “I wrote it with as little help as possible.” Said Melania Trump about her speech in an interview with Matt Lauer of NBC.

A source from the campaign suggested to the Guardian that Rick Gates is the one to blame, who is longtime aide to leading Trump strategist Paul Manafort. It is also mentioned by the source that Gates authorized the final speech and edited it. Manafort is a veteran Conservative operative and has connections with a number of foreign regimes, which includes former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych. Manafort joined the Trump campaign in March to advise on a potential delegate fight but shortly gained control of the entire campaign and edged out campaign manager Corey Lewandowski. Manafort had the benefit of his many years of experience as well as the fact that he refused to accept any salary from Trump Organisation as he moved into the presumptive nominee’s orbit. An expert of campaigns going back to Gerald Ford’s 1976 re-election effort, Manafort moved to hire longtime advisers and associates like Gates. Jon Favreau, who is a White House speechwriter for the Obama administration, pointed out that the writer of Michelle Obama, who wrote the speech which Michelle Obama delivered in 2008, used to work for Hillary Clinton and Trump campaign plagiarized from  a Hillary speechwriter. Many plagiarism scandals have periodically haunted the politics of United States. Infamously, the 1988 presidential campaign of the ex vice-president, Joe Biden, was ended over accusations that the then senator from Delaware had plagiarized Neil Kinnock, the head of the British Labour party during the time.

Melania Trump and Controversy Regarding Her Official White House Website Biography

donald-and-melania-trump-conferenceThe renewed Trump White House website has reportedly added, and after that swiftly deleted a reference to First Lady Melania Trump’s jewellery business. At the exact same time that the White House website was apparently altered to remove every reference to climate change, global warming and LGBT rights. A biography of Melania Trump, which was deleted later too, was put on the site which was published on Washington Post. It said: “Melania is also a successful entrepreneur. In April 2010, Melania Trump launched her own jewellery collection, ‘Melania™ Timepieces & Jewelry,’ on QVC [the TV shopping channel] ”.The particular online reference was made at a time when Donald Trump is dealing with mounting controversy over feasible conflicts of interests in between his numerous commercial issues and his presidential duties. However, the  biography on White House website was altered in order to delete the name Mrs Trump’s jewellery business after the Washington Post report was published. The ‘First Lady Melania Trump’ page now says: “Melania is also a successful Entrepreneur. In April 2010, Melania Trump launched her own jewellery collection. ”

One of the spokesperson for Mrs Trump insisted that the initial mentioning of the jewellery business had been intended as a mere statement associated with fact rather then any kind of plug. The removal of the name of the business name  was only done out of an large quantity of caution, added the spokesperson.QVC stated that they do not sell Mrs Trump’s jewellery anymore. The biography on the White House website did manage to get Mrs Trump’s education details correct – in contrast to the account circulated during the campaign which suggested Melania Trump had received a degree in Design and Architecture  at the University in Slovenia. This led to embarrassment after journalists learned that Mrs. Trump had attended university but she did not graduate. After this incidence Trump Organisation completely deleted her biography from the business website. The updated biography on the White House website states: “She would pursue a degree at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia, but pause her studies to advance her modelling career in Milan and Paris before moving to New York in 1996.” The White House website biography furthermore goes into what a few have suggested is an unusual amount of details about Mrs Trump’s  appearances on the media. It states: “As a model, Melania has appeared in high profile ad campaigns and worked with some of the top photographers in the fashion industry, including Patrick Demarchelier, Helmut Newton, Arthur Elgort, Ellen Von Unwerth, Peter Arnell, Antoine Verglas and Mario Testino. “She has graced the covers of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, British GQ, Ocean Drive, Avenue, In Style, and New York Magazine.“Her major layouts include the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, Allure, Vogue, Self, Glamour, Vanity Fair, and Elle. “In addition, Melania has appeared in numerous television commercials and television programs, including co-hosting The View with Barbara Walters.” The biography also lavishes praise on the generosity {of the|from the} billionaire’s wife. “With a penchant and passion for the arts, architecture, design, fashion and beauty,” it states, “Melania has thrived on the cultural diversification of New York City. This passion can only be surpassed by her dedication to helping others, and her generosity has been noted.”

After listing a series Melania Trump's philanthropic commitments, the White House website also adds: “In 2010, Melania was the Chairwoman for The American Heart Association which raised $1.7 million for research. Melania's philanthropic interests represent her humanitarian side, and she remains an indefatigable and dedicated New Yorker.” It also states: “In 2006, Melania Trump proudly became a citizen of the United States of America. She is only the second First Lady born outside of the United States. The first since Louisa Adams, wife to John Quincy Adams, the nation’s sixth president.”

Conclusion

Many people like Melania, and people don't. But like it or not, she is the honourable first lady of the United States. Let's support her in her fight for the rights of women and children and her fight against cyber-bullying.
